Story Telling – My Personal Favorite

By February 25, 2015May 13th, 2019Uncategorized

This month our Inbound Marketing Phoenix event focuses on story telling – for content marketing, for business marketing, for life in general. The event, a part of Phoenix Startup Week 2015, brings together four story-telling masters to explore that the anatomy of stories, the psychology of stories, and practical applications. You can read more about it our recent blog – Inbound Marketing Phoenix: Storytelling.

While story telling is in the air, so to speak, in the Alaniz Marketing community, now is a great time to introduce my personal favorite ‘instruction manual’ on story telling. It is the best-selling book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller. Miller teaches story telling by demonstration – he tells his own story on learning the art and application of stories as he develops the script for a movie of his life.

What makes this book so engaging is the casual and hilarious style that brings you into the depth of the author’s thoughts as he learns about what makes real stories.

Why is this book so popular (4.5 out of 5.0 stars on Amazon)? Miller uses a dizzying variety of experiences from the classic themes of a man seeking out his father, guy chasing girl, and the knight on a quest, to vignettes of how he orders a pizza. He offers insight into the writing process. But most of all, he leaves the reader with a desire and a process to make our own lives into better stories.
